  Chiang Mai is the hub of Northern Thailand. With a population of over 170,000 in the city proper , it is Thailand's fifth-largest city. Located on a plain at an elevation of 316 m, surrounded by mountains and lush countryside, it is much greener and quieter than the capital, and has a cosmopolitan air and a significant expat population, factors which have led many from Bangkok to settle permanently in this "Rose of the North".

  Chiang Mai's northern location and moderate elevation results in the city having a more temperate climate than that of the south.As with the rest of Thailand there are three seasons, a cool season from Nov-Feb, a hot season from Mar-Jun, and a wet season from Jul-Oct.

  The food alone is really reason enough for a trip to Thailand. Curries, fruit shakes, stir fries, fresh fish made a zillion ways - and that's just the beginning. Food in Thailand can be as cheap and easy as 25 baht pad thai (Thai fried noodles) cooked at a street stall or as expensive and complicated as a $100 ten-course meal by a royal chef served in one of Bangkok's 5 star hotels.
